LETCHWORTH CLINIC CLOCKS UP 45 YEARS

Leading the way in natural therapy for the region

The Letchworth Clinic for Natural Therapy, the oldest established practice of its kind in North Hertfordshire, is celebrating 45 years of providing treatments such as osteopathy, acupuncture, and naturopathy to the local community. At the same time the principal of the clinic, Mr Roger Newman Turner, is marking 40 years in practice.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments are now well known and widely used, but this was not always the case. When F Newman Turner, Roger’s father, moved his naturopathic and herbal medicine practice to Letchworth in 1958, they were regarded with considerable scepticism. ‘In recent years there has been much more published evidence for the benefits of CAM treatments in creating better health than there was when I graduated’ said Mr Newman Turner. ‘We now get regular referrals from local GPs for a wide range of problems, particularly back pain’.

Naturopathy uses nutritional medicine, herbal treatment, and physical therapies such as simple water treatments that can be applied in the home, to treat conditions ranging from headaches and joint problems to digestive disorders, allergies, and chronic fatigue. ‘We are fortunate in having access to many new innovative tests to make a more accurate diagnosis of our patients’ underlying problems’ said Mr Newman Turner.

Because of their multiple skills the practitioners at the clinic are able to combine treatment approaches where necessary. Naturopaths Roger Newman Turner and Trevor Reeves ND, DO, also practice acupuncture, whilst Manjit Sehmby, BSc(Ost), ND, also uses cranial osteopathy, a gentle manual technique that can help infants and children with developmental problems. All three practitioners use nutritional medicine as a central part of their approach.

Patients attending the Letchworth Clinic, situated on Norton Way South in Letchworth Garden City, range in age from 96 to just a few months old. ‘One of the most pleasing aspects of our work is the loyalty of some of our patients’ said Roger. ‘We are still treating a few who first came to see my father almost 45 years ago. By taking more responsibility for their own health, with our guidance, I hope that they haven’t needed to trouble their over-worked GPs so much.’

F.Newman Turner was already well established in London as a medical herbalist and naturopath when he moved to Letchworth, so our London service dates back almost 50 years.

Our youngest and oldest patients
Rupert Britten (15 months) was six weeks old when he first came for treatment. Mrs M.R. Witherden is 96.
